Vision therapy

Vision therapy is also known as vision training, visual therapy, eye training, behavioural optometry or orthoptics therapy. It is therapy for visual system which includes the brain and eyes. Through a series of progressive therapeutic procedures patients develop or recover normal visual skills. Vision therapy is remarkably successful in rehabilitating all types of binocular vision impairments including amblyopic (lazy eye), strabismus, esostropia, exotropia, hyperphoria or loss of binocular fusion.
With egards to the development or recovery of binocular vision, vision therapy is much more successful than surgery or glasses alone. Patients of all ages can benefit from vision therapy. The nature of the therapy program varies with the condition treated and age of the patient.
When the program is completed the benefit of visual therapy will last for a lifetime. Accurate focusing and the use of both eyes together efficiently is a reflex which when conditioned, should operate effortlessly. Self monitoring activities are prescribed at the end of each therapy program.
Vision therapy is prescribed to treat diagnosed conditions of the visual system. Effective therapy requires visual skills to be developed until they are integrated with other systems and become automatic, enabling individuals to achieve their full potential. The goals of a vision therapy treatment schedule are to achieve desired visual outcomes, improve the signs and symptoms, meet the patient's needs, and improve the patient's quality of life.
